Limited, Intermediate and Unlimited Examinations consist of one hundred multiple-choice questions and each examinee will have a maximum time of six hours to complete the examination.
Special Restricted Examinations: Single Family Detached Residential Dwelling (SP-SFD), Plumbing and Heating (SP-PH), Electric Sign (SP-ES), Elevator (SP-EL), and Groundwater Pump (SP-WP) consist of forty multiple-choice questions and each examinee will have a maximum time of three hours to complete the examination.
Fire Alarm/Low Voltage (SP-FA/LV), consists of fifty multiple-choice questions and each examinee will have a maximum of three hours to complete the examination.
Swimming Pool Bonding (SP-SP), consists of twenty-five multiple-choice questions and each examinee will have a maximum of one hour to complete the examination.
The Board has contracted with PSI Services LLC, a national testing company that provides a variety of licensing and certification services to regulatory agencies, to administer and score the computer based examinations.
PSI Services LLC has seven available testing centers located in the following cities: Asheville, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem.
You will have the convenience of scheduling your own examination date at one of these locations that is suitable to you. Additionally, you will receive your examination score the same day.
After being approved for examination by the Board you may make reservations for your computer based examination by contacting PSI Services LLC by one of the following methods: Internet or Telephone.
You will be required to present two forms of identification, one of which must include a government issued photograph such as your drivers license. Code books, calculators and all other necessities will be provided at the site.
If you fail to take the qualifying examination during your given authorization period, or miss your scheduled exam session, you will forfeit the fee and you will be required to reapply to the Board’s office for any future examination.
Each examinee will be furnished with a copy of the current National Electrical Code (NEC) and will be allowed to refer to any part of the NEC during the examination. The examination questions based on the Electrical Contractors Licensing Law (General Statutes Chapter 87, Article 4 and Title 21, North Carolina Administrative Code Chapter 18B) are designed as closed book questions. Questions affiliated with the NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management-North Carolina Electrical Edition are designed as closed book questions. Lastly, questions in connection with the National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA72) are also designed as closed book questions.

Results of the Exam
A minimum grade of 75 is required for passing any qualifying examination administered by the Board for any class of electrical contracting license. Examination results are mailed to examinees approximately three weeks following the last scheduled examination.
Waiting Period Between Examinations
A person who fails a qualifying examination must wait before being eligible to take another regular examination in the same classification. The waiting period depends on the score on the failed examination, as follows:

A person who fails an examination in the same classification three times must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 16 hours of classroom education on the electrical code provided by a board-approved continuing education sponsor before retaking the examination.
All examinations are held in the Board's office for one year following the date of taking the examination. Each examinee has the privilege of reviewing his examination one time during this one year period. The review fee is $25.00.
