How can I get an exam application?

Examination Information Handbooks can be requested by calling the main line of our office (919-733-9042) or by calling 1-800-392-6102. The packets are also available for download from the Board's website here.

I’ve paid for my exam but can’t make it. Can my fee be applied to the next exam?

Examination fee(s) for the current examination do not carry over to the next examination if applicant is unable to attend.

If I’ve taken the test before, do I still have to complete a new packet?

If applying for the same classification previously taken, only the exam application is necessary. If upgrading a license, additional information may be required.

What study guides are available to prepare for the exam?

All examinations are based on the current National Electrical Code and other references. A reference list & order forms are available in the Examination Information Handbook.

What courses can I take to prepare for the exam?

There are several preparatory classes available through local Community Colleges & private instructors. Many Continuing Education sponsors offer courses.

How much does it cost to take an examination?

All examinations are $90.00.

When can I take the exam?

Computer based testing is offered throughout the year. A person who fails a regular qualifying examination must wait before being eligible to take another regular examination in the same classification. The waiting period depends on the score on the failed examination, as follows:

64 and below 6 months

Where will the exam be given?

All qualifying examinations are now computer-based, administered by Promissor Inc. Testing centers are located in Asheville, Statesville, Huntersville, Raleigh, Wilmington and New Bern. Some out-of-state locations are also available.

When can I apply for my examination?

Applicant may apply anytime throughout the year. Once applicant receives authorization from the Board, applicant will now be able to set up a testing date and location with Promissor Inc.

How can I qualify for an examination?

Experience varies by classification. Requirements are listed in Section .0200 of the Board's Rules and Regulations, printed in the back of the Exam Information Booklet & online.

How long does it take to be approved for an exam?

The Board receives several applications daily. Please allow 5-10 business days for approval notification.

How can I change my scheduled examination date?

To change or cancel your reservation, you must properly notify Promissor Inc. before your scheduled examination. With proper notification (four days) applicant will be able to reschedule without penalty.

I’ve paid for my exam but can’t make it. Can I get a refund?

Upon written request, explaining circumstances, the Board may grant a full, partial or no refund of fees paid for an examination.

Once I get approved to take the examination how long do I have to schedule my examination?

Applicant will have an authorization period of three months. Authorization period begins on the day of approval by the Board.

How do I verify my experience if I am self-employed?

The Board has affidavit forms which may be used to verify your experience if you are self employed. Call the Board's office & staff can evaluate your form needs.
